Dear Older 4-H Member:

      Below is information for Trip Awards and other award opportunities.  Most of the opportunities require a special application that must be requested. Please look over the information carefully. Note: The due date is January 21, 2005. There are many opportunities for you to apply for and participate in, but you cannot be selected if you do not apply. Below are the opportunities available and how to apply.

County Opportunities - Trip Awards (request & complete the 4-H Achievement Record - Due January 21, 2005)

1. Citizenship Washington-Focus - June 19 to 25, 2005      
      A week-long trip to Washington D.C. for older 4-H members from the Southwest  District. Champaign County sends two. You will be staying at the National 4-H Center,  traveling by bus. The trip includes sightseeing, seminars, programs, a chance to meet with  your Congressman and a lot of FUN! Full-time participation is required. Ages: 15 &  older.  Cost: $250-$300. Actual cost is in the $830 range with local donor support.

2. State 4-H Leadership Camp & Conservation Camp - July 25 to 30, 2005
      Champaign County sends two delegates. Held at 4-H Camp Ohio. Leadership Camp is a  once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is a challenging, in-depth, learn-by-doing leadership development experience. Known as one of the best programs of its kind in the nation.  Full-time participation is required. Ages: 15 & older. Cost: None.  The Conservation Camp is one of the  best camps of its kind. Campers  study about land use capability, soil, water, forestry,  wildlife and recreational land use. Lots of hands-on experiences with great field trips!  Full-time participation is required. Ages: 14 & older. Cost: Usually none due to local  donor support.

Recognition/Training Opportunities

1. 4-H Ambassador (complete 4-H Ambassador Form - request from Extension Office -
 Due January 21, 2005)
      Purpose: to recognize 4-H teens who have achieved high standards of excellence in their  4-H program. Must qualify by scoring a minimum in various categories listed in the  application. Those who qualify and are selected  receive  training as 4-H spokesperson, participate in 6-8 additional programs and assist at State  4-H events. Ages: High School Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or Senior as of January 1, 2005. 

2. Buckeye Leadership Workshop - April 1-6, 2005 (request application from  Extension Office)
      An excellent recreation, craft and camp leadership training program held at the  Recreation Unlimited, Inc. Camp. BLW is for adults and young adults ages 16 & older or at least a Sophomore in high school. You can learn many unique skills, including recreational leadership skills. Cost: $345. (Note: there are scholarships given that cover about half of the cost - need to apply for these by January 5th.)

3. State 4-H Opportunities & Awards (request & complete the 4-H Achievement Record -  Due January 21, 2005)
      Sometimes there are only a few applicants in the state for some of these award categories. Some of the categories are for award opportunities for project work. State award winners in the project areas attend National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, GA.  Others are for specific subject matter conferences. Make a copy for each category you are applying for.  Contact the Extension Office if you have any questions.

Scholarships

 4-H Scholarships - (request & complete the 4-H Achievement Records and Scholarship Application Sheet - due January 21, 2005)
      Designed for high school seniors or college freshmen. Many of the scholarships are for specific colleges/universities and specific courses of study.  You may request the Scholarship Sheet from the Extension Office.  Make a copy for each scholarship you are applying for.
