     4-H Youth Development

Welcome to 4-H in the Classroom !
Each year school teachers in Champaign county, Ohio, use 4-H materials to suppliment their teaching.  The classroom becomes a 4-H group, the students 4-H members and the teacher is the 4-H advisor.  There is a variety of 4-H materials that teach on a variety of science related topics.  Teachers find that the materials help them make education fun and exciting, plus meet specific curriculmn needs.  In 2002, 17 classrooms used 4-H School Enrichment materials.

More About  4-H in the Classroom
The Champaign county office of OSU Extension has had funding reduced by state and county government and is will be working with less staff and reduced money for travel and supplies. We will continue to make available the School Enrichment projects listed below but only if they are done as "4-H groups".  This requires the teacher to complete the group enrollment form (simple) and the teacher becomes the 4-H advisor.  For a Champaign county teacher to get more information or to sign up, contact the Champaign county office of OSU Extension at 937-484-1526.

Program Information & Updates
These are the most popular School Enrichment projects for use in classrooms:

The Incredible Egg (#165 GPM) - This takes 28 days to do. The eggs need to be set in the middle of the first week of the month.  We have seven incubators for loan and can arrange for the fertile eggs.  You must pickup and return the incubators and baby chicks.  We will come out and candle the eggs, explaining what is happening to the embryo. Candling is done at 10-14 days. It is best to do all interested teachers at a school all at the same time. The baby chicks go back to the donor of the fertile eggs.  The Teaching Manual is $2.75.

Breads of the Harvest (#489 GPM) - Teaches the science, history and nutrition of bread making.  Class makes colonial loaves of bread.  The Extension office will continue to come out and supervise the bread making.  Teachers will need to pay for the cost of supplies (flour) that is not already on-hand.

Fishy Science (#625 GPM) - Do fish sleep with their eyes open? Do fish drink water? Just a few of the questions this project will answer as students learn about the science of fish.  The Teaching Manual is $2.50.

Science Fun With Dairy Foods (#490 GPM) - Series of easy to do lessons that introduce yogurt making, cheese making and other activities with milk.  The Extension office can come out and do cheese making with the students.  The teacher will need to supply a gallon of whole milk and cups.  The Teaching Manual is $2.50.

Go Plants (#695 GPM) - NEW - Learn about plants, seeds, roots, stems, leaves and flowers.  Has many student worksheets and activities to do.  The Teaching Manual is $7.00.
