Pest Management
Garden Center
Kiosk Project Summary
An Outreach and
Engagement Grant
The Pest Management Garden Center
Kiosk Project is progressing on schedule. The acquisition and assembly
of the various components (iMac computer, touch sensitive screen, laser
printer, custom acrylic enclosure, and poster materials) took most of the
summer. The University of Illinois originally designed the software used
to operate the kiosk. I devoted a substantial amount of time in the
fall editing and updating the 16 different modules of the kiosk to reflect
information relevant to Ohio's conditions. Most of the state specialists
involved in the project also reviewed modules relevant to their field of
expertise, and had their comments incorporated into the final version.
On January 2, 2003, the garden
center kiosk, nicknamed the "Gardeners' Tool Shed" was placed at Siebenthaler's
Garden Center in Centerville, a town just south of Dayton. This garden
center was chosen for its high exposure potential and loyal customer base.
The unit will remain there for the next several months, undergoing evaluation
by the customers of the store. A one page evaluation instrument is
made available to every one who interacts with the kiosk. These surveys
are collected by store employees and will be periodically summarized for
the final report. Based on the acceptance of the kiosk by the clientele
and the perceived value the kiosk brings to the garden center, we will
investigate leasing or rental arrangements for future units.
